DSLR Photography for Beginners    NEW!

This basic/intermediate class will teach students how to get more out of their DSLR camera. They will learn how to navigate their camera settings, functions, and access other menus that will help improve their photographic skills. Students are required to bring their DSLR cameras with charged batteries for some hands-on time during each of the classes. If you own a tripod, please pack that as well. We will be taking photos throughout the class as we navigate the camera settings. Let’s have some fun!

Jim started taking pictures when he was around 15 years old. He became the head photographer for the high school newspaper in 1973 and was responsible for taking photos for all the school activities. This included football, basketball, swim team, track, tennis, and many other club functions. He began processing black and white film, along with printing B&W photos during his high school years in the school’s darkroom. After graduating, Jim set up a color film lab in his home and began to develop color film and printing color images. This hobby continued for many years. Jim started shooting commercial property and houses for some local real estate agents. He continued to develop film, along with printing large color prints in his lab until the DSLR revolution hit. Throughout his life he shot photos when traveling and imaged many special family moments as his kids grew up. Jim of course made the switch to digital and began doing weddings, imaging both in video and still photography. His current commercial endeavor is shooting homes for real estate agents that include both ground and aerial photos using a drone in the Ocala area. He has a FAA Part 107 license that allows him to commercially shoot both video and photos using his drone. Jim enjoys editing his videos with Adobe Premiere Pro and tweaks his photos using Adobe Photoshop. Another aspect of his imaging is astrophotography. Jim has imaged the Moon, lunar eclipses, the transit of Mercury, the Galilean moons of Jupiter, the planet Mars, the Sun, galaxies, nebulae, star clusters and many other deep sky objects. He continues this hobby with the Moonstruck Astronomy club during his retirement here at OTOW.
