Climate and Environmental Change in the Maya Region of Mesoamerica    NEW!

Mayan Edzna photoThis course will present an overview of what is known about long-term climate and environmental change in the Maya Region of Mesoamerica. The take-home message is that lowland environments in the Neotropical area were dynamic throughout the late Pleistocene (end of the last Ice Age) and the Holocene (the last ~11,500 years), initially as a consequence of climate changes, and later, because of human activities. We will first review modern climate and environmental conditions in the Maya Lowlands. Then we will review data gleaned from lake sediment cores and cave speleothems (stalagmites), which enable us to infer past climate and environmental conditions. Along with archaeological information on ancient Maya population densities, we can evaluate the many ways in which the ancient people of the region altered their landscapes and ecology. We will also review the multiple lines of evidence that implicate protracted droughts in the Terminal Classic cultural "collapse," and discuss whether the ancient Maya case serves as a lesson for 21st-century inhabitants of Earth, who are now facing climate changes that are proceeding at a rate unprecedented in human history.

Note: Dr. Brenner will be attending remotely from University of Florida.
