Kitchen Chemistry I: Where Science Meets Magic (No Batteries)

In this fun and fast paced class, students will create beautiful pieces of jewelry in amazing colors.  Niobium is a lightweight and hypoallergenic metal that can be easily anodized with electricity. Demonstrations will also be done with batteries, so that students will be able to accomplish anodizing at home. There will be an emphasis on safety for all processes. Bring home the colors.

Day One: Students will learn about the properties of niobium and some of the unique characteristics to keep in mind when working with this material.  Students will conceptualize and problem-solve their designs.  Next they will form and finish each piece.  All textures and dimension will be added, edges will be filed and sanded, holes will be added.

Day Two:  Complete all steps necessary in preparation to the final step of anodizing.  All necessary findings and connections will be finished and ready to be anodized.  Pieces will be tumbled in preparation for anodizing.

Day Three:  Demonstrations of anodizing will be given and color charts will be available to guide you in your addition of color to your pieces. Students will have time to practice on scrap pieces before moving onto finishing their own creations.  Finally, students will use a power source to anodize their pieces in the colors they choose and assemble their finished pieces of jewelry.  Your finished pieces can be worn home that same day.

Please be aware: This class requires a certain amount of manual dexterity and hand strength.
