Let's Get Hammered- Metalsmithing

Fold-forming is a technique of metalworking in which metal is folded and forged into
fascinating 3-dimensional forms. Throughout this process the metal is stretched by the
hammer blows and as new folds are added, fluid and three-dimensional forms are created.
Come and learn how to add dimension and interest as you create using hammers, torches and imagination. Create Jewelry and sculptural pieces. In this exciting class, students will learn the principles of fold-forming, a process that was developed by Charles Lewton Brain. Students will learn how to fold metal, selectively hammer, anneal and unfold to create 3 dimensional forms. Through repetition and innovation, the sky really is the limit. Students will be working with thin sheets of copper; however, these skills are easily transferred to silver or even gold.
Additionally, copper tubing may be used to create very dimensional air-chase pieces. Once these skills are mastered, students will have to opportunity to translate these skills into pendants, earrings or perhaps even bracelets.
For safety: Please wear cotton clothing and closed-toe shoes. No loose-fitting clothes. Long hair must be pulled back. Bring ear protection. Please be aware: This class requires a certain amount of manual dexterity and hand strength.
